Our President

Building Value Partners, LLC was started in 2006 by Ben Schwab.  This business venture is a continuation of Ben's use of cutting edge construction technologies for the past 25 years.

Ben's exposure to construction began early in life.  His father, Keith Schwab, was the third generation of Schwabs to own and operate a general construction company in Winona Minnesota. Ben had many opportunities to gain hands-on understanding of building construction as he worked on jobsites during high school and college.  After high school, Ben attended Iowa State University and studied construction engineering.  He graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor's degree in construction engineering.

Ben's experience with construction continued to broaden after graduation from Iowa State.  He went to work as a project engineer for Weitz Company, a nationwide construction company.  Project sites included locations in Des Moines, IA, Pittsburgh, PA and Boston, MA.  In 1986 he moved to Gainesville Florida to start a branch office of the family business.  Many of his projects were done for the University of Florida.  In 1993 he sold the Florida business and moved back to Winona, returning to the family business.  Ben did cost estimating, project management, and was Vice President of estimating for the firm from 2001 to 2006.

Ben's use of cutting edge construction technologies began with a portable Compaq computer in 1983.  This portable computer was about the size of a suitcase.  Ben developed spreadsheets and word processing tools to track and expedite project management activities on his projects for Weitz Company.  In the late 1980's he used Macintosh computers, and added CPM scheduling to keep his projects on schedule.  In the early 1990's he developed templates for spreadsheets, word processing, scheduling, and databases to make his office function more efficiently.  After returning to the family business, Ben developed several generations of estimating and project management systems.  In his last years with the company, he was instrumental in moving the company to an integrated estimating/cost accounting/project management system to more efficiently price, plan and monitor work.
